Windsurfing Wissant – A short guide to one of Central Europe´s best wave spots

Backlook1Wissant is just one of the best Wave Spots reachable by car. From the middle of Germany, i.e. Wiesbaden, you may start the 586km trip at 05:30h and already can catch your first wave at 11:00 a.m. with a brilliant view to the white cliffs of Dover which are on the opposite side of the channel.

Wissant is situated between Cap Griz Nez and Cap Blanc Nez on the Cote d´Opal west of Calais.

Best wave conditions on the 7 km beach are side-shore or side-one-shore from W or NW. On normally pretty constant E or NE winds you have more or less freeride conditions.

It is very important to check the tide. On high tide you have to watch the obstacles in front of the promenade and the camping site. Also before and after the peak of high tide there is a very strong current, which remains still substantial between the tides.
Also it is highly recommended not get washed in front of the promenade on high tide. Otherwise you have a good chance to shred your equipment on the solid bank reinforcement.
However, on big advantage is that there are no riffs to get pulled over.

Once you manage the shore break you get clean and fair breaking waves. On big days Wissant locals – surely the one of the best windsurfers in France and beyond – giving an impression what to do. PWA-Riders like Jules Denel and his brother Justin or Yann Sun as well as younger talents like Arthur Arutkin and his Sister Alice and many others show jumps and moves on worldcup niveau.

After some World War II bombs had been removed from the beach last autumn you also should be sure that you will not hit your last big jump.FronLoop

On May, 2nd the waiting period for the Wissant Wave Classic 2015 started, still waiting for the pré-alert and the confirmation. According to the current forecast it might happen next weekend.

For a quick meal between the sessions as well as also a later dinner the La Terrace is recommended. A more sophisticated dinner you will receive at La Chaloupe, where reservation is necessary. The Green Bistro is a little bit special but ok; also you can go to the Tie Break at the Tennis Club.
If you appreciate an excellent dinner with a spectacular view you should reserve at the La Sirene at Cap Griz Nez.

Because of its beauty Wissant´s hotels are very often fully booked, so I do not give any recommendations for hotels ;-).IMG_7635

However, who likes camping will find a very nice camping site.

A la prochaine à Wissant!
